Freelance Rate Calculator

Turn a monthly income goal into an hourly or per-project rate, accounting for non-billable time and expenses.

Your numbers

Not 8 — admin, calls, proposals and revisions eat into the day. Most freelancers bill 4–6 hours out of an 8-hour day.

Software subscriptions, internet, equipment EMI, coworking, etc.

Covers income tax and the weeks between projects when you're not billing.

Your hourly rate should be at least
₹0/hr
Billable hours / month0
Base cost (income + expenses)₹0
+ Tax & downtime margin₹0
Total needed / month₹0
Suggested day rate (8 hrs)₹0
Suggested week rate (5 days)₹0

This is a floor, not a ceiling — adjust upward for specialised skills, urgent turnarounds, or high-stakes work. Use the Project Quote Calculator to turn this into a fixed-price quote.

Why this formula

Most new freelancers price off a "what sounds reasonable" number instead of their actual cost of doing business. This calculator works backwards from the income you actually need, divided by the hours you can actually bill (not the hours you work), with a margin added for the tax bill and the inevitable slow weeks between projects. It's the same logic used to price day rates in consulting and agency work, simplified to one screen.
