How to become a data entry operator
A data entry operator types, copies and checks information in computer systems: invoices, customer records, stock lists and forms. Most of the work is in Excel, Google Sheets, Tally or a company’s own software, and accuracy matters more than speed.
Steps to become a data entry operator
- Finish school or a degree
12th pass is enough for many jobs; a B.Com or any graduate degree opens better-paid back office roles.

Practise daily until you reach 35–40 words a minute with almost no mistakes. Free online typing tests show your progress.
- Learn Excel and one accounting tool
Sorting, filters, VLOOKUP and basic formulas in Excel, plus Tally if you want billing or accounts entry work.
- Get a short certificate
A computer course or an online MS Office certificate helps your resume pass the first screening.
- Apply and take the typing test
Most employers test typing speed and accuracy at the interview, so practise with real forms beforehand.
