Frequently asked questions

Freelancing, invoicing, GST, income tax, contracts and hiring, answered simply.

What is scope creep and how do I prevent it?
Scope creep is when a project gradually grows beyond what was originally agreed, usually through several small "can you also just..." requests rather than one big change. Prevent it by defining deliverables, revision limits, and what's explicitly out of scope in writing before work starts.

A client is asking for more than we agreed — what do I do?
Refer back to the written scope in your contract or proposal. Acknowledge the request, note that it falls outside the original scope, and offer to quote it as an add-on rather than absorbing it for free. Most reasonable clients understand this when it's framed calmly and tied to the document both sides agreed to.

What is a project kickoff call and why does it matter?
A kickoff call is the first structured conversation between a freelancer/agency and client at the start of a project, used to confirm scope, timeline, decision-makers, communication channels, and any open questions before work begins. Skipping it often leads to misunderstandings that surface later, when they're more expensive to fix.
