Penpot is the main open-source alternative to Figma: it runs in the browser, works with a team and can run on your own server. Licences and dates read from each project’s public code page on 31 Oct 2026.

For the pieces around them
| Software | Good for | Licence | Last code change |

| GIMP | Edit images for your screens | GPL | 30 Oct 2026 |
Before you switch
- Move one real project first. Plugins and some Figma files will not carry across exactly.
- Self-hosting gives you control of your files, and also the work of keeping a server updated and backed up.
- Check how your developers will read the designs, because the handoff tools differ.
Questions people ask
Is Penpot free?
Its code is open source under the MPL-2.0 licence, so you can run it yourself at no licence cost. It also has a hosted service. Check its site for the current hosted plans.
Can Penpot open Figma files?
Not directly as a native format. Check Penpot’s own help pages for current import options, and test with a real file before you plan a move.
How we check this page
eGig has no paid placements here and does not make these products. A licence shown as “mixed” means the project’s licence file puts parts of it under different terms, so read that file before you rely on it, especially for business use. Check each project’s own site before you install anything, and download only from there. How we check facts.
