- Ask for code they wrote, or a public profile, and read a little of it.
- Give a paid task of a few hours from your real project. Unpaid take-home work turns away the best people.
- Ask them to explain a past mistake and what they changed.
- Check references for anything long term.

The table above shows typical monthly pay. Freelance prices depend on the work, and the eGig price guides give basic, standard and premium ranges for common projects such as websites and apps.
Where can I hire a developer without paying commission?
On eGig, neither side pays commission: post a project free or message freelancers directly, and pay them directly. Contra also charges freelancers no commission. Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer.com charge fees but hold the money and handle disputes.
How do I check that a freelance developer is genuine?
Look at real work you can open, talk on a video call, start with a small paid task, and never hand over server passwords before you have agreed the terms. Use access that you can remove later.
