Open-source tools for everyday work
For most developers and small teams, VSCodium, Git, DBeaver and Bruno cover daily work, Mattermost and Nextcloud cover teamwork, and Ollama runs AI models on your own computer. Licences and dates read from each project’s public code page on 31 Oct 2026.

Before you switch
- Read the licence if you build a paid product on top of a tool, especially AGPL, which has conditions for software you run for others.
- Check that a project is still active. A popular tool can stop getting security fixes.
- AI models have licences of their own, separate from the software that runs them, and need a capable computer.
Questions people ask
What does open source mean?
The code is public under a licence that lets anyone read, change and share it. It does not always mean free of cost, and it does not promise support.
Are open-source tools good enough for a company?
Many companies run on them, but somebody has to take responsibility for updates and backups. Paid support exists for many of these projects if you want it.
How we check this page
eGig has no paid placements here and does not make these products. A licence shown as “mixed” means the project’s licence file puts parts of it under different terms, so read that file before you rely on it, especially for business use. Check each project’s own site before you install anything, and download only from there. How we check facts.
