Free Brick Calculator: Bricks, Cement and Sand for a Wall

Count the bricks, cement bags and sand for a wall, in feet or metres, for modular, traditional or custom brick sizes.

Brick sizes differ from one kiln to the next, so measure a few of yours and use the custom size for the closest count.

How the count is worked out

Bricks = wall volume ÷ the volume of one brick with its mortar. A modular brick with a 10 mm joint counts as 200 × 100 × 100 mm, or 0.002 m³.

Mortar = wall volume − the volume of the bricks themselves. Dry mortar = wet mortar × 1.33.

Cement bags = dry mortar × 1 ÷ (1 + sand parts) ÷ 0.0347. Sand = dry mortar × sand parts ÷ (1 + sand parts).

Example: a one-brick wall 10 m long and 3 m high, in modular bricks, is 30 m² × 0.2 m = 6 m³. That takes 3,000 bricks. The bricks fill 4.62 m³, leaving 1.38 m³ of mortar, or 1.84 m³ dry. At 1 : 6, that is about 7.6 bags of cement and 1.58 m³ of sand, before wastage.

The wall thickness here includes one mortar joint, as the count needs it: one brick is brick length + joint, and half a brick is brick width + joint.

Questions people ask

How many bricks are in 1 cubic metre of wall?
About 500 modular bricks (190 × 90 × 90 mm with a 10 mm joint). Traditional 230 × 110 × 75 mm bricks come to about 408. Brick sizes vary, so measure yours and use the custom size.
How many bricks are needed for a 10 × 10 ft wall?
A one-brick wall in traditional bricks with a 10 mm joint needs about 911 bricks, and a half-brick wall about 455. Add wastage on top. Your exact count depends on the brick size and the joint.
Which mortar mix should I use?
A 1 : 6 mix is common for ordinary brickwork, and 1 : 4 for half-brick walls and work exposed to weather. Your engineer’s specification comes first.
Does this work for AAC or fly ash blocks?
Yes, choose custom size and enter the block size and joint. AAC blocks are often laid with a thin joint and special adhesive, so the cement and sand figures would not apply.
