Percentage formulas
Marks: marks ÷ total × 100. 432 out of 500 is 86.4%.
X% of Y: X ÷ 100 × Y. 15% of 2,000 is 300.
Change: (new − old) ÷ old × 100. From 50,000 to 60,000 is a rise of 20%.
Taking a percentage out: final amount ÷ (1 + percent ÷ 100). 1,180 with 18% added was 1,000 before. A common mistake is to take 18% of 1,180, which gives the wrong answer.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate the percentage of marks?
Divide your marks by the total and multiply by 100. For 432 out of 500, 432 ÷ 500 × 100 = 86.4%.
How do I calculate a percentage increase?
Take the new value minus the old value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. From 50,000 to 60,000 is a rise of 20%.
How do I take 18% out of a total?
