How to answer “Why do you want to work here?”
Employers want people who chose them on purpose and are likely to stay. A specific answer shows you did your research.
How to answer
- Research the company: what it sells, its customers, recent news and its values.
- Pick one or two things that genuinely appeal to you.
- Connect them to your skills and goals.
Sample answers
Use these as a starting point. Swap in your own experience and numbers, and practise saying your answer out loud.
I have used your app for two years to order groceries, and I have noticed how quickly it has grown into new cities. I want to start my career somewhere that is growing fast, because I think I will learn more in a year here than in three years elsewhere. Your graduate programme, which rotates through operations and customer teams, is exactly the kind of start I am looking for.
You are known for training your staff well, and several people I respect started their careers here. You have also just opened two new branches, which tells me there is room to grow. With my five years in hospital pharmacy, I would like to help set up the new branches and build a team that keeps your standards.
I like that you are a family-run business that has served the same neighbourhood for twenty years. Your customer reviews mention staff by name, which tells me people here care about their work. I want to work somewhere I can get to know regular customers rather than be one of hundreds of staff.
Mistakes to avoid
- Talking only about pay or location.
- Generic praise like “you are a great company”.
- Getting facts about the company wrong.
