How your age is worked out

We count whole months from your date of birth up to the date you choose, then the days left over. Twelve months make a year.

Example: born on 15 January 2000, on 1 August 2026 you are 26 years, 6 months and 17 days.

Exam age limits: most notices mean you must have reached the lowest age, and must not yet have reached the highest age, on the date they name. A limit of 18 to 27 usually means 26 years, 11 months and 30 days is within it, and 27 years exactly is not. Many notices also print the exact birth dates allowed, and those come first.

Enter the relaxation for your category from the notice itself, because it changes between exams. This tool does not decide if you are eligible: the notification does.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate my age for an exam form?
Use the “age as on” date in the notification, rather than today’s date. Enter your date of birth and that date to see your exact age.
Does this include age relaxation?
You can enter your category’s relaxation from the notice. It is added to the highest age. The rules differ by exam, so the notice decides.
What if I was born on 29 February?
In other years we count your birthday as 28 February. Different offices may treat this in their own way.
