Margin and markup formulas

Margin = profit ÷ selling price × 100. It tells you how much of each rupee of sales you keep.

Markup = profit ÷ cost × 100. It tells you how much you added on top of your cost.

Price for a margin = cost ÷ (1 − margin ÷ 100). Price for a markup = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100).

Example: cost ₹700 and price ₹1,000 means a profit of ₹300, a margin of 30% and a markup of 42.86%. A common mistake is to add 30% to the cost: that gives ₹910, which is only a 23% margin.

Keep GST out of your margin, because you pay it on to the government. Rates here follow the slabs in force since 22 September 2025, and some goods have other rates, so check yours. See also the break-even calculator and GST calculator.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost. A ₹700 item sold at ₹1,000 has a 30% margin and a 42.86% markup.
How do I price an item for a 30% margin?
Divide the cost by (1 − 0.30). A cost of ₹700 gives a price of ₹1,000. Simply adding 30% to the cost gives ₹910, which is only a 23% margin.
Should GST be included in my margin?
No. GST collected is passed on to the government, so work out your margin on the price without GST.
